Grand National Tips: Treacle

Placed in a Grade 1 on his last start and has enjoyed a trouble-free build up. Jumps and stays, a perfect combination for Aintree.

It has been a long road to the Grand National for Treacle, his trainer Tom Taaffe stating the race had been the target since he was a three-year-old, he is now 11!

Hopefully it has been worth the wait, as he arrives in Liverpool at the top of his game. On his last start he finished third in the Irish Hennessy; a race that was given a significant boost of credibility when the fourth-placed horse, Follow The Plan, won the Betfred Bowl on Thursday.

On his previous run he was a fast finishing second in the Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown. Both races were over 3miles and the way Treacle powered home, you’d expect the marathon trip of the National is perfect for him.

Although the horse has a history of injury, this is the first trouble-free period he has enjoyed since 2009 when he won the Munster National. At 20/1 he rates a good each way bet to win the big one, with Paddy Power paying ¼ odds for a top 5 finish.
