Goodwood Tips: Imperial Guest

Spent most of the season running over 7f on soft ground. A drop back in trip combined with a quick surface is ideal.

In the last seven editions of the Steward’s Cup (3.55 Goodwood) the winning horse has been drawn in stalls 10-19. With 28 runners usually contesting the race, the middle stalls are the place to be.

Drawn in 18, Imperial Guest has an excellent chance at huge odds. Apart from being able to race down the centre of the track, he is also drawn next to Es Que Love the likely pacesetter; this should give him an excellent tow into the race.

For the first time this season, he is racing under his ideal conditions. All his wins have come at 6f and on ground no softer than good. Amazingly, he’s only had those conditions three times in the last two years. In those races, he has finished 1, 5 & 3, with a win over subsequent Group horse Deacon Blues.

Although this is his first run at Goodwood, he has won on a downhill track before at Brighton. With such a big field, the Steward’s Cup is often run at a frenetic gallop; this should bring Imperial Guest’s extra stamina into play. At 33/1 (BetVictor) he is not a forlorn hope.
