Goodwood Tips: Caucus

Won two of his last three starts and should take a hand in a weak looking renewal.

The two-mile division has been muddling this season with no horse dominating proceedings. Estimate sits top of the tree due to her win in the Ascot Gold Cup, but she is yet to better an RPR of 113, which calls into doubt the quality of the Ascot race.

Saddler’s Rock and Colour Vision both come straight from Ascot but neither have looked at their best this season.

Given the poor quality Cup form on offer, I think the winner will come from elsewhere. Caucus has been quietly building his reputation in two-mile pattern contests and he can make the step up to Group-class.

He finished down the field in last year’s Ascot Gold Cup but his run was excusable because he pulled a muscle during the race. Since then he’s won two of his three starts, beating Cavalryman at Newmarket, finishing second behind Estimate and winning a Listed contest at Sandown.

Although he’s six-years-old, he is lightly raced and seems to be improving. Last time out at Sandown he recorded his highest Racing Post Rating and should be one of the favourites to win a weak looking Goodwood Cup.
