Flemenstar 7/1 For Gold Cup

The winner of the John Durkan Chase has been cut for the Cheltenham Gold Cup although doubts still persist over his stamina.

The big race in Ireland this weekend was the John Durkan Chase at Punchestown and although only three horses lined up it included Gold Cup hopefuls Sir Des Champs and Flemenstar.

Peter Casey’s 7-year-old prevailed and Flemenstar was trimmed to 7/1 (Boylesports) to win the Gold Cup. Still yet to win beyond 2m4f, there is a question mark over his stamina although his trainer is confident he will get 3m2f.

Sir Des Champs was eased to 7/1 (Ladbrokes) in the Gold Cup betting but certainly isn’t one to write off yet. Willie Mullins expects him to improve for the outing and he will get better as he goes up in trip.

Sprinter Sacre was the star of the show at Sandown on Saturday running away with the Tingle Creek by 15 lengths. It was a terrific performance and he’s no bigger than 4/7 (Boylesports) to win the Champion Chase. Connections of Sanctuaire (16/1 William Hill) should also be applauded for trying to force Sprinter Sacre into a mistake as Ruby Walsh blasted off in front, a bold tactic that ultimately cost him second place.

Captain Conan made it 2/2 over fences in Sandown’s Grade 1 novices’ chase and is 7/1 (Boylesports) for the Arkle although he will probably need to improve to beat the likes of Simonsig or Arvika Ligeonniere.
