Down Royal Tips: Kauto Stone

Ran his best race for Paul Nicholls at Down Royal last year and crying out for step up in trip.

After the retirement of Kauto Star, it would be fitting if his half brother Kauto Stone landed the JNWine at Down Royal (2.25), a race his illustrious sibling won twice in his magnificent career.

Leaving aside the fairytale story there are solid racing reasons why Kauto Stone could go well. His best performance last season came at Down Royal; a track that clearly suits him and the step up to 3miles is also favourable.

After winning a 2m6f race in France on heavy ground, it seemed stamina was his main asset therefore it was surprising to seem him campaigned over 2miles on his switch to the UK.

In last year’s Tingle Creek he didn’t have the change of gears to match Sizing Europe, as he lost 8 lengths between the second last and last fence. To his credit he stayed on up the hill, maintaining the gap to the line.

They reoppose today and the extra mile should play to Kauto Stone’s strengths, especially as Sizing Europe still looks a doubtful stayer, making him the value bet at 6/1 (William Hill).
