Chester Vase Odds

A preview of the runners contesting the big race on day two of the Chester May Festival.

The Chester Vase (2.55) is a Derby trial although its record of producing winners of the classic is not good. Recent alumni have included Doctor Freemantle and Soldier Of Fortune both who went on the finish fourth at Epsom. We look through the field to see if there are any future champions.

Chester Vase Preview (listed by stall number):

1. Madawi: 25/1
Still a maiden the best he has managed in his career is a third place. Doesn’t look good enough.
Derby Odds: No Entry

2. Treasure Beach: 3/1
Being stuffed by Frankel in the Royal Lodge does not look so bad now. He could have finished closer if granted a clear run. Aiden O’Brien has a good record in the race over recent years.
Derby Odds: 66/1

3. Slumber: 9/4
He won the Derby trail at Epsom in April very comfortably. That did not look the strongest of races and the Chester Vase will tell us more about his prospects.
Derby Odds: No Entry

4. Sadler’s Risk: 12/1
Well beaten at Newmarket this season he doesn’t look like a Derby prospect. However, his front running style means he always has a chance of stealing a race at tracks like Chester.
Derby Odds: No Entry

5. Nathaniel: 7/4
A wide margin winner of his maiden when 1/20 at Haydock, the race did not tell us much. A promising two year old, he got to within half a length of Frankel on his debut, the closest anyone has been since. Will be suited by the trip but his form is hard to judge.
Derby Odds: 20/1
