Chester Ormonde Stakes’ Odds

A preview of the runners contesting the big race on the final day of the Chester May Festival.

The Ormonde Stakes at 2.55 is often contested by a small but select field of middle distance runners. A good pointer to the Coronation Cup at Epsom, the race has been a springboard for some excellent horses, including Harbinger last year.

Chester Ormonde Stakes (listed by stall number):

1. Harris Tweed: 11/8
Enjoyed a productive 2010 with four wins and two second places, his only poor run coming in the Great Voltigeur. A speedy front runner, his career best performance came at Chester and a danger if left loose in the lead.

2. St Nicholas Abbey: 6/4
Last year’s evens money favourite for the 2000 Guineas has struggled with injury. His reappearance at the Curragh was underwhelming and there is not a lot to recommend him other than his juvenile form. That was two years ago and he has it all to prove.

3. Fanditha: 50/1
Rated only 88 he looks outclassed. The best he has managed is a class four handicap win on the all weather. Looks thoroughly exposed and only here for the prize money.

4. Allied Powers: 11/2
Spent most of last season plying his trade in Europe with varying degrees of success. Short of being top class he was still able to mop up in lower group company. Needed his reappearance at Newbury and should come on for the run.

5. Chink Of Light: 40/1
Only a maiden win to his name and rated 97 he looks outclassed. He finished a creditable third in the Chester Vase last year but minor honours probably the best he can hope for again.
