Cheltenham Tips: Tatenen

Showed he still had ability when winning a valuable handicap at Ascot in January. Only seven-years-old and best when fresh.

Having been favourite for the Arkle way back in 2009 it is fair to say Tatenen hasn’t fully delivered on his promise, but there is talent lurking there. He is the sort of horse who pops up unexpectedly to win at a big price, as he did at Ascot when he won a valuable handicap chase as 22/1. The 2.30 at Cheltenham is a similarly valuable handicap and at 25/1 (Boylesports) he could surprise again.

Backing this horse after a long break might be one way to catch him at his best. Last year he finished 10.5 lengths behind Riverside Theatre on his seasonal return. No mean feat off level weights, especially when you consider that horse went on to finish second in the King George.

Racing off a mark only 5lbs higher than his Ascot win, Tatenen doesn’t look badly handicapped. Owned by the Stewart family, his connections also sponsor the race so don’t be surprised if he has been laid out for this. At 25/1 (Boylesports) back him each way with 1/4 odds for a top four finish.
