Cammidge Trophy Tip: Bated Breath

Cammidge Trophy

Ignore the stories suggesting he needs the run. He has won on his seasonal debut before and is good enough to win now.

The 2.35 at Doncaster is a listed race but the field isn’t that strong. It contains a mixture of handicappers with excessively high ratings and sprinters that are short of being top class. One horse I expect to progress from this level is Bated Breath. In the expert hands of Roger Charlton, he was hugely impressive in winning his first three starts. His two defeats came in August when he encountered unseasonably soft ground, but still emerged from those defeats with credit.

The one thing that stops this horse being an even money shot is the well trodden line that Roger Charlton’s horses always come on for the first run. This is true and something the trainer has always admitted regarding his horses. I agree Bated Breath will improve for the run; ultimately he will be competing in Group One’s this season, but regardless of what the future holds he is good enough to win this race now.

The horse made his debut in April last year and that didn’t stop him winning by 3.5 lengths. He has proven that he runs well fresh and I’m happy to believe he will do so again.
