Brighton Tips: Waseem Faris

Handles soft ground and down in grade. Better than bare result last time out; poorly positioned early in the race.

The 5.10 Brighton has one the most peculiar betting markets I’ve seen for a long time. Somehow, Griffin Point is favourite despite never winning in this grade (0-14) and generally having a moderate strike rate (4-47).

With a false favourite there is value all over the place but I’m most interested in Waseem Faris.

Mick Channon’s sprinter also has a poor strike rate (2-41) but he’s spent his entire career fighting an unfeasible handicap mark. This will be the second time he’s raced in a class 5 contest and the drop in grade should see him win.

Last time out he finished sixth, beaten 4.5 lengths by Threave but his inexperienced jockey didn’t cover himself in glory. Waseem Faris was too far back in a race run at an even gallop and he couldn’t make up the deficit, despite staying on with purpose in the last furlong.

I expect George Baker will race more handily because on ratings he is on the best horse. Two starts back he finished a length behind Da’Quonde on soft ground at Chester, that horse franked the form by winning yesterday making Waseem Faris an excellent bet at 11/2 (Stan James).
