Ascot: Ainsdale
Record on soft or heavy is 141211 and better than bare result in Germany last time. Hampered out gates and struggled to get a gap but finished strongly in ultimately hopeless cause.
The weather forecast at Ascot looks pretty dreadful and yesterday’s times suggest the straight course is already riding soft as opposed to the going description of ‘good-to-soft’. If the forecast rain arrives, and it’s difficult to see how it wouldn’t, then we could be racing on heavy by the 3.15 contest.
That brings Ainsdale into play. His record on soft or heavy is 141211 and he was eye-catching on a return from a 63 day break. The Goldene Peitsche is a race i’ve always liked and the form often udnerrated. You can watch a reply here and you will see Ainsdale was unlucky.
Hampered out the gates (by the eventual winner) he was stuck in rear when he needed to be handy. By the time the gaps came the winner had flown but Ainsdale stayed on well to take fourth.
He’s got a bit of class and given the underfoot conditions shouldn’t be written off.
