Aintree Tips: Sire De Grugy

Aintree Tips: Sire De Grugy

After an injury hit preparation, the Champion Chase probably came too soon especially after a gruelling prep-race at Chepstow.

Silviniaco Conti proved that the market is often quick to dismiss a horse after one poor run and the same can be said of Sire De Grugy in the 3.25 Aintree.

His National Hunt season only got under-way in February because of injury and he’s been playing catch-up ever since.

Gary Moore needed to get a run into him before Cheltenham but a gruelling affair in the mud at Chepstow probably took the edge off him.

On paper his Chepstow victory didn’t amount to much, but the race was run at a strong gallop and to carry 11-12 to victory in soft ground was some effort.

I expect the Champion Chase came too soon but he still ran well to finish 4th.

He takes on a different set of horses for the Melling Chase but he shouldn’t be overawed. This is a horse who has won seven of his last ten starts and on ratings he is still a 170+ performer.

At the time of writing there is 8/1 available but I recommend taking the 15/2 (Bet365) with best odds guaranteed in case he drifts on the day.
