Aintree Tips: Hinterland

Brought down when going well in the Champion Chase and return to novice company represents a drop in grade.

It was a bold move from Paul Nicholls to run Hinterland in the Champion Chase rather than the Arkle, but I can understand why.

Firstly, the absence of Sprinter Sacre gave everyone the chance to win a championship race and secondly Hinterland won a novice chase at Sandown in a faster time than Sire De Grugy’s Tingle Creek victory.

The clock should never be viewed in isolation because pace has a large impact on overall times, but there’s no denying Hinterland is potentially a smart 2-mile chaser.

We never got to see how good because he was brought down at Cheltenham but he hadn’t lost the race at that stage.

Back in novice company he looks the class act and should go well in the 2.05 Aintree at 3/1 (Betfred).
