Zurich Classic Tip: Trey Mullinax & Scott Stallings

Mullinax took the lead when dragging his partner to a T31 finish last year. Stallings is an upgrade with the bonus that they play a similair style of golf. Both arrive in good form.

The Zurich Classic is an unusual event because it is a pairs competitions. Players alternate across four-ball and foursome format with a cut coming after round 2. As you would expect the low scoring comes on the four-ball days but scratchy foursomes can also lose you the tournament.

For such a new event it’s hard to determine the skill set you need but good form carries whatever event you have. That brings together the likely lads of Scott Stallings and Trey Mullinax. The latter blew a good chance to break his duck on the PGA Tour at Harbour Town on Sunday. Joint-leader going into the back-nine, his challenge came unstuck when he found the water at 14; everything after that we can ignore.

Scott Stallings also has some form to his name with his last five events producing finishes of 40-MC-9-23-49 plus a third place finish earlier in the season at Pebble Beach. Both players have prodigious length off the tee, so expect fireworks during the four-balls but there is enough consistency to suggest they can hold it together during the alternate shot format.

The pairing should suit Mullinax, especially after carrying around the dead-weight of Jonathan Randolph twelve months ago. In the four-ball format Mullinax made 10 birdies and an eagle, his team mate contributed one solitary birdie. This more even partnership could yield returns.
