What's the story - Rory Glory

McIlroy's life has changed overnight.

The winner of the US Open was never in doubt as McIlroy fired a fourth consecutive round under 70 to canter over the line.

Golf has found itself a new sensation after Rory McIlroy shot a final round 69 and effortlessly strode to the US Open title by a margin of eight shots. After his highly publicised capitulation at the Masters in April, the 22-year-old answered any doubters in the most emphatic style imaginable as record after record fell at the Congressional Club. McIlroy scored the lowest ever four-round total at the US Open and finished the most strokes under par (-17) in the 111-year history of the event.

The Northern Ireland youngster has immediately become hot favourite for the British Open to be played at Royal St Georges next month at a best price of just 13/2 with Coral. The knock-on effect of becoming the youngest winner of the US Open since Bobby Jones in 1923, and in such style, knows no bounds. McIlroy is a best price of 10/1 with Boylesports for next year’s US Masters, although Tiger Woods is still marginally favoured at Augusta, for now at least.

Australia’s Jason Day was the best of the rest as he finished runner-up for the second major championship in a row. In all the hype surrounding the winner it may be forgotten that Day is only a year older than McIlroy and he is 40/1 with skybet to go one better at the British Open. Lee Westwood had yet another good run in a big event, finishing in a tie for third at six under par. The Englishman can still be picked up at 11/1 with Betfred to break his major duck at St Georges.
