WGC Invitational – Dustin Johnson

Six top 25s in a row including runner-up at the Open. Finished 15th at Firestone last year.

Unfortunately Dustin Johnson is being remembered for all the wrong reasons again. A second place at the British Open was a terrific performance, especially considering he was suffering from flu. Yet the abiding memory is that terrible shot on the 14th hole that went out of bounds, effectively ending his challenge.

I’d much rather take the positives away from Kent. Yet again he competed at the sharp end of a major, proving he can raise his game for the big events. Outside of the majors it doesn’t get much bigger, or valuable than a World Golf Championship event.

The big hitting American arrives in excellent form. He has six consecutive top 25 finishes and has finished no worse than 22nd in his two visits to Firestone. He also has a game that suits the course. Fifth on tour for driving distance, he is also 15th for GIRs showing that he makes the most of his ability off the tee. At a course that ranks the longest on tour for a par-70, his length will be a huge asset.

A regular winner on the PGA tour, he has won in each of the last three years, he looks set to score again.
