WGC Mexico Championship: Cameron Smith

Been on excellent run of form, putting him inside the world's top-30. Ranked fifth in strokes gained with approaches to the green, a key pointer to success at Club de Golf Chapultepec.

The Club de Golf Chapultepec has already created some great drama in the two years it has hosted a WGC event and golf fans look set for another treat. Measuring 7,345-yards, it’s not exactly a monster, and once you take into account the longer ball-flight at altitude, it becomes one of the shortest courses played on tour - but it is a cracker.

Justin Thomas, Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson have all gone well at this venue and the statistics that tie them together are shots gained with approaches and birdies. This is not the sort of course you can batter into submission and it looks ideal for Cameron Smith.

The Australian has come of age in the last twelve months and is now ranked an impressive 27th in the world. Ranked fifth on tour for strokes gained with approaches to the green and 19th for birdie average he fits any nascent trends and he also arrives in Mexico in great form.

Smith has finished in the top-10 in six of his last twelve starts worldwide, which includes the defence of the Australian PGA Championship. His game is now at the level where he should compete for WGCs and Majors, and Mexico looks a good fit. Although this is his first look at The Club de Golf Chapultepec, he’s enjoyed success on a variety of courses and shot-making is a strength of his game.
