US Open Tip: Adam Scott

Massive improvements with the putter should enable him to contend at a course where the short game is put under a severe examination. Leads the tour in scrambling from the rough.

Since 2003, Adam Scott has finished the season with a positive strokes gained putting just three times. In 2019 he is gaining over half a stroke on the field with the flat stick and ranks 22nd in strokes gained putting. It’s been a remarkable turnaround for the Australian but he needs to capitalise on this upturn with a win.

Tee-to-green Scott’s game is as good as ever and he ranks 5th on tour for adjusted scoring average. Current form also gets a tick as he finished a highly creditable second at the Memorial and was the only player to put some pressure on Cantlay late on Sunday. His form in majors is also good, he’s finished in the top-20 in the last four majors and was T8 at Bethpage Black.

The only concern, other than strength of the opposition is the course this week. Scott rarely plays the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and his record at that event is 52-MC-61. We can safely assume the course will be set up much tougher but Scott also missed the cut when the US Open was at Pebble Beach in 2010.

Statistically the course should suit, the greens are small and the rough lush but Scott leads the tour in scrambling from the rough this season. At 30/1 with Paddy Power paying 10 places, he warrants an each-way investment.
