Turkish Open Tip: Matthew Southgate
Ranked in the top-10 on tour for strokes gained off the tee and GIRs. Has converted enough opportunities because of putter blowing hot and cold but this Maxx Royal should suit his game.
The Turkish Open returns to the Montgomerie Maxx Royal after three years away but the test is fairly similair wherever you are in Belek. Just Rose hit over 80% of greens in regulation on the way to victory on the Carya course last year and something similair is probably required again.
When it comes to ball-striking Matthew Southgate has been riding high on the European Tour this season. He is ranked 8th in strokes gained off the tee and 6th for GIRs. With those sorts of numbers you’d expect him to be contending almost every week unfortunately his putter can misbehave. He missed the cut at the Italian Open when almost last in strokes gained putting but the flat stick has cooperated enough this season to help him to five top-10 finishes.
Southgate’s T31 at the Portugal Masters was helped by a positive putting display and he won’t need to improve much because his elite ball-striking is a big plus on the more testing layout of the Maxx Royal.
