Players Championship Tip: Cameron Smith

Hasn't made weekend in two visits to TPC Sawgrass but course will play differently in March. Driving wayward but everything else working terrifically well. Can mix it with best as T6 in Mexico attests.

Cameron Smith’s excellent run of form came to an end with a missed cut at the Honda Classic but that’s nothing to worry about, it’s the first time he’s missed a weekend since the US Open!

The bigger picture is of a young player enjoying his golf. A solo PGA Tour win and contending in a major are next on the horizon and a T6 at the WGC Mexico proves he can mix it with the best.

Not the greatest driver of the ball; second shot inwards Smith is dynamite. He ranks in the top-30 on tour for strokes gained with approaches, around the green and putting.

Two missed cuts in two visits to TPC Sawgrass help keep his price high but I think it’s an over-reaction. He is yet to witness The Players in March and the change in date helps; the rough will be less penal, whilst the fairways will play wider if the rain arrives.

The field for the event is stacked but Smith is value at 70/1 with Paddy Power paying 10 places at 1/5 odds.
