The Open: Lewis And Bjorn Lead

Bjorn Again

Veteran Thomas Bjorn and young amateur Tom Lewis top the leaderboard with Martin Kaymer leading the betting.

It was a fascinating first day to the Open Championship with 2003 runner-up Thomas Bjorn setting an early clubhouse target of five under. A late replacement for Vijay Singh, the popular Dane is 22/1 to win having started as a 200/1 shot.

It was an even more remarkable day for the young amateur Tom Lewis. A winner of local qualifying at Rye, the 20-year-old started the tournament as a 300/1 outsider before tying for the clubhouse lead. He does have course form however, he won the British Boys Championship at Royal St George’s in 2009. He can now be backed at 40/1.

Most of the big names are in contention with McIlroy 12/1, Westwood 14/1 and Donald 20/1 all lurking at one over par. Martin Kaymer and Graeme McDowell share favouritism with McIlroy but with a three shot advantage, both are at two-under.
