The Memorial Tips: Gary Woodland

Yet to go really close to a win but has only missed one cut all season and ball-striking statistics are much improved on 2015.

Gary Woodland languishes 74th in the FedEx Cup, his worst position for the past four seasons but there are plenty of reasons to be positive. His results might not show it but he is playing much better than last season.

In the key ball-striking metrics he is much improved. For adjusting scoring average he is ranked 27th (94th in 2015) for GIRs 22nd (79th) and strokes gained total 23rd (86th).

His putting is still streaky but it is only a matter of time before he takes his opportunities because his ball-striking is excellent.

Last season he missed the cut at Muirfield Village but that was down to a dreadful putting display on Thursday where he lost 5 strokes to the field. On debut in 2011, he finished sixth and was T16 in 2013 so he can play the course.

Woodland has missed only one cut all season and arrives off the back of five consecutive top-35s, including a T12 at the Byron Nelson. At 80/1 (Paddy Power) he is a good bet with 1/5 odds for a top-7 finish.
