The McGladrey Classic Tips: Roberto Castro

One of the best ball strikers on tour and should enjoy the testing greens.

In a similar vein to my first selection I’m siding with a player that doesn’t make many mistakes. Ranked 34th for bogey avoidance on tour, Roberto Castro has achieved a high level of consistency considering this is his rookie season.

The 27-year-old, who was educated locally at Georgia Tech, is one of the best ball strikers on tour. Ranked 20th for total driving and 23rd for GIRs he keeps the ball in play and creates plenty of opportunities. His one weakness is taking them. Ranked 153rd for birdie or better conversion he struggles to capitalise on the GIRs.

This department of his game was exposed at the JT Shriners and Frys.com Open, both tournaments that can descend into a putting competition. The McGladrey Classic is a different challenge however. Sea Island’s greens are notoriously tricky therefore his putting won’t be so exposed.

At 200/1 (Sportingbet) he is excellent each-way value with ¼ odds for a top-5 finish.
