RSM Classic Tip: Hunter Mahan

The wins of Matt Kuchar and Lee Westwood last week was an increasingly rare blow for the old guard and perhaps it can serve as inspiration for Hunter Mahan. The American is perhaps best remembered for the tournaments he’s lost rather than won but after bottoming out at 859 in the world he is on the way up again.

The 36-year-old had the ignominy of going through the Web.com Finals to regain his card and he performed with credit, registering a second place at the DAP Championship.

The positive signs have been there in the numbers. Despite his struggles, Mahan finished last season ranked inside the top-35 on tour for Strokes Gained off the tee and putting, he also ranked in the top-50 for driving accuracy and GIRs. Those sort of numbers are well suited to Sea Island, a classic lay-out that is not particularly long but relies on a degree of accuracy.
