McGladrey Classic Golf Tips: Davis Love III

Love Affair with Seaside golf

His hometown tournament and a course that suits his game. A T9 at the Open proves he can still cut it at the top level.

Ryder Cup captain, Davis Love III returns home for the McGladery Classic - he even has a restaurant called Davis Love Grill in Sea Island. The arrival of the PGA Tour should be good for business, but not just for restaurant takings. With a $4million purse on offer, a good finish will boost the bank balance.

The Seaside course at Sea Island Resort is very similar to Waialae Country Club, the venue for the Sony Open in Hawaii. Both are par 70s, built by the sea and with Bermuda grass greens. Love started his year in America’s 50th state with a T9 and has a string of further top tens at the tournament. Seaside golf clearly suits him and his exceptionally high ball flight allows him to land the ball softly on the firm greens.

His form this season is encouraging. Davis Love finished T9 at the British Open back in July, one of eight top 20 finishes this year. He was also in contention at the PGA Championship until a poor weekend dropped him into the pack. Ryder Cup captains are perceived as golfers past their prime, but not in his case.

Snap up the 100/1 with Ladbrokes, excellent value especially as the bookmaker is the only firm offering ¼ odds for a top six finish.
