The Golf Outsider: Dubai World Championship
Our long shots expert takes a different look at the betting market, in what is the last European Tour event of the year.
The Race to Dubai title is all but over, with only Rory McIlroy mathematically able to catch Luke Donald. But with lots of money and ranking points available there is still plenty to play for and I believe we could see an upset this week. Bad news for the superstitious amongst you, as I am hoping that 13 is my lucky number – all three picks finished in this position last year!
Dubai World Championship Selections
First up is Thomas Aiken, who finally found some form on his last start at the SA Open, finishing third. He broke his duck on the European Tour this year at the Open de Espana, and has had 8 other top 10 finishes, so it has been an exceptional season all round. As mentioned he was 13th last year in Dubai, and coincidentally 13th the year before that. With both course and current form looking good, he is excellent value at the price.
Recommended Bet: Thomas Aiken at 120.0
Y.E. Yang is truly an international golfing star, and can be backed at a generous price of 60.0 to notch up another win in a strong field. He made a decent effort here last year (13th), and was 7th on his last start in Hong Kong. With three European Tour titles and a major under his belt, he is one to rely on.

Finally I’ll plump with Ross Fisher, who has already been backed on the exchanges but I still think is worth a crack at triple figure odds. He was 13th here last year (I don’t think I mentioned that yet?) and apart from a missed cut on his last start, he looks like getting back to the form that made him a Ryder Cup player. One of his best results this year was in the Dubai Desert Classic so I am guessing he likes the place.
