Shriners Open Tip: Trey Mullinax

Shriners Open: Trey Mullinax

Like Smylie Kaufman he can provide us with a big price winner of the Shriners. Hits it a mile, good putter and already shown glimpses during the wraparound season.

At the start of the season I highlighted four tour rookies to watch and now is the time to capitalise on those predictions. In that article, I described Trey Mullinax as Smylie Kaufman 2.0 and having tipped Kaufman at 250/1 to win last year’s edition of the Shriners Open I’m hoping lightning can strike twice. The similarity between their games in uncanny both ranked inside the top-10 for driving distance, putting average and birdie average during their final seasons on the Web.com Tour.

After an opening round of 65 at the Sanderson Farms Classic there was a danger Mullinax would peak a weak early but rather than win he did the next best thing and slip down the field without anyone noticing.

The Country Club of Jackson had too much trouble waiting for wayward drivers but that isn’t an issue at the TPC Summerlin. Kaufman finished last season with a driving accuracy of 53% but hit 64% of fairways in Las Vegas.

We know Trey Mulliax has the power for the PGA Tour and he makes a tonne of birdies. He has also shot four rounds in the 60s this season - if he can string them all together he wins.
