Scottish Open Tips: Richard Sterne

Very little wrong with his game en route to T11 last week and finished T31 on only visit to Castle Stuart.

Richard Sterne has battled with injuries over the years but if he’d stayed healthy he may have matched contemporaries Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel for majors. We can only speculate on what might have been but in the here and now, he’s still a very good golfer.

Apart from a poor couple of rounds at Wentworth, the 34-year-old has finished T4-T45-T10-MC-T11 and is enjoying a strong run of form.

In France he ranked sixth in our all-around ranking (comprising total driving, GIRs and putt per GIR) and his final position underestimates his level of play.

Like most South Africans, he is comfortable playing in the wind and on a links course and his Open record is good, with three top-40 finishes.

Sterne finished T31 on his one and only visit to Castle Stuart but it promised much better after opening with rounds of 67-69 before falling back over the weekend. At 90/1 (Paddy Power), he is fancied to go well with 1/5 odds for a top-7 finish.
