Rocket Mortgage Classic Tip: Curtis Luck

One of best putters on tour and wasn't long ago he was touted as the next 'big thing'. Won US Amateur on Donald Ross designed course and shot 71 or better in last eight competitive rounds.

The Rocket Mortgage Classic is a new event on the PGA Tour and therefore i’m rolling the dice and looking for a slice of Luck. Detroit Golf Club is our host this week but information is thin on the ground. It appears to be a classic (1916), tree-lined course, designed by Donald Ross. That doesn’t make it unique, there are numerous Ross courses on tour but it does provide a link with Curtis Luck who won the 2016 US Amateur at the Ross designed Oakland Hills Country Club.

The 22-year-old Australian already appears to be yesterday’s man, Viktor Hovland is a fraction of his price but Luck has more professional experience. He came through the Web.com Tour Final Series last autumn and finished T13 at the Valspar Championship, another classic tree lines course.

A demon on the greens, he is ranked 14th in strokes gained putting although statistically that is where the good news ends. The ball-striking numbers don’t make for great reading but the scoring is ok, Luck hasn’t shot worse than 71 in his last eight rounds and that is despite a run of results that read 43-MC-MC.

He is playing better than the bare results and on a course that might suit, he’s worth a punt at 300/1 with Paddy Power paying 8 places at 1/5 odds.
