RBC Heritage Tips: Zach Johnson

Tight course plays to his strengths and T11 at Bay Hill signals he is in form.

Last season was the first time Zach Johnson didn’t win a PGA Tour event since 2006. Rather than the start of a decline, it was a probably a deviation from the mean. It shouldn’t be long until he is back in the winner’s enclosure.

Ranked 148th for driving distance, his chances increase at venues that aren’t reliant on yardage off the tee. Ranked 8th on tour for driving accuracy, 10th for scrambling and 22nd for scoring average, it is the finer points of golf where he excels.

Although results at Harbour Town have been patchy in recent years, Johnson finished sixth in 2007, days after winning the Masters. Last week’s T32 at Augusta might seem underwhelming but the course is too long for him nowadays. A T11 at Bay Hill was more encouraging and a repeat of that form should seem him go close.

A proven winner, he is overpriced at 40/1 (Bodog) on a course that suits his game. Back him each way with ¼ odds for a top-six finish.
