AT&T National Tips: David Hearn

Strong putter in the crucial 5-10 foot range and was an impressive three-over for his final three rounds at Merion

After Graham DeLaet finished third at last week’s Travelers it could be the turn of another Canadian to go close on the PGA Tour.

Unlike his big hitting compatriot, David Hearn’s strength is his short game. The 34-year-old is ranked 23rd for strokes gained putting and 31st for scrambling from more than 30 yards.

These attributes should serve him well at Congressional, last year the course ranked third-lowest in scrambling and fourth most difficult for putting inside 10 feet.  David Hearn is particularly strong in this range; his 62% success rate from 5-10 feet is the fourth highest on tour.

Recent form is also encouraging. Hearn has four top-30 finishes in his last five tournaments and was an impressive three-over par for his final three rounds at the US Open on a brute of a course

If he continues that form on one of the PGA Tour’s most demanding courses he could stand a chance at 125/1 (Coral). Back him each-way and get ¼ odds for a top-5 finish.
