President’s Cup Tips: Charl Schwartzel

Scored 3.5 points in the last Presidents Cup, has a good record at Muirfield Village and ranked fifth for birdie average on tour.

With seven debutants in the International team, it is difficult to gauge how they will react to the pressures of a team event. PGA Tour regulars like Graham DeLaet and Marc Leishman should feel at home but in the individual market I’m sticking with proven class in Charl Schwartzel.

The former Masters champion scored an impressive 3.5 points on his Presidents Cup debut and Nick Price is right when he says his opposite number should be wary of the South African.

Charl Schwartzel averages 4.06 birdies per round, fifth best on the PGA Tour, and has four top-30 finishes in his last five starts at Muirfield Village, including a T8 in June at the Memorial Tournament.

The 29-year-old is one of the leaders in the International team and I expect him to play in all five matches. He could form a devastating partnership with compatriot Richard Sterne and at 7/1 (Betfred) he looks a good bet to be the top International points scorer.
