Phoenix Open Tip: Daniel Berger

Has slipped down the world rankings without doing a great deal wrong. Underlying numbers this season similar to his best (2017) and has three top-15 finishes in five visits to Scottsdale.

Daniel Berger started 2019 by dropping out of the world’s top-50. He ended it falling outside the top-150 but such are the fine margins you couldn’t call it an abysmal twelve months.

Berger actually made 19/25 cuts; he was just lacking the high finishes to bring him the ranking points. He finished the calendar year on an upwards trend and with four top-30 finishes in his last six starts he will surely find his way back to the top again.

This season (which started in late 2019) he ranks 44th for adjusted scoring average, 35th in strokes gained off the tee and 25th in birdie average - very similar to his numbers in his peak season of 2017 (25th, 55th, 24th respectively).

His record at TPC Scottsdale is an impressive 10-58-7-11-MC and last year he missed the cut on the number; if he had two-putted from 28ft on his final hole he would have made the weekend. So we have a course that suits his game, underlying numbers in line with his best golf and a consistent run of form - it all adds up to a cracking bet.

Betfred are paying 7 places at 1/5 odds.
