Nicholas Thompson Can Surprise At 300/1

Finished T6 last year and has a good record on easy courses.

The Humana Challenge is a peculiar tournament in many ways. It is spread across three courses and follows a pro-am format for the first three days. It is also statistically the easiest event on the PGA Tour with an average winning score of 24-under for the past five seasons.

These factors create an environment where outsiders can thrive, which brings me to my first selection – Nicholas Thompson.

The 31-year-old might have the profile of a journeyman pro (no wins from 163 starts) but his record in the Humana Challenge is good. Last year he finished T6, bettering his previous high of T12 in 2008.

Thompson is generally at his best on easy courses. He finished fourth in last season’s Sanderson Farms Championship and T12 in the John Deere Classic, tournaments that are essentially shootouts.

At 300/1 (Betfred) a finish in the top-5 guarantees a big payday.
