USPGA Championship Golf Tips: Rory McIlroy

McIlroy at home in the States

Bounced back to form last week and has a terrific record in the final major of the season.

After all the hype surrounding his US Open win, there was always going to be a case of ‘after the Lord Mayor’s show’. That comedown occurred in Europe after scrappy results at the British and Irish Opens. Spats surrounding the weather in Kent and criticism of his caddie seemed to unsettle the young major winner. For the first time since the US Masters the pressure seemed to be getting to him.

A trip across the Atlantic has given him the respite he needs. With Darren Clarke and Tiger Woods dominating the golfing headlines in the past fortnight, Rory McIlroy has been relatively anonymous.

A T6 finish at Firestone also went unacknowledged. Rounds of 68-68-67-67 could be considered boringly consistent. That does him a disservice. Six bogeys all tournament was reminiscent of the control in his game that won McIlroy the US Open.

His last three starts in the US have yielded a: T6-1-5. It is no surprise McIlroy announced that next year he would be focusing on the PGA Tour; it clearly suits him.

His record at the USPGA Championship is also excellent, with two third placed finishes in a row. Although 12/1 favourite, when placed next to Luke Donald and Lee Westwood at similar prices, backing the Northern Irishman seems the logical choice.
