Genesis Invitational: Jhonattan Vegas

Enjoyed excellent weekend at Saudi Invitational and enjoying resurgence in career. Second for driving distance and 4th for GIRs at Torrey Pines; bodes well for a similair driving test.

After a fallow period that saw Jhonattan Vegas fall outside the world’s top-200; last year must be regarded as a huge success. The 37-year-old finished runner-up three times and although these were in lesser PGA Tour events they provided evidence of his improved golf. That upswing has continued into 2022 and perhaps time we cash-in.

No-one played the weekend better than Vegas at the Saudi International and previous to that he finished T39 at the Farmers Insurance Open. Like Riviera, Torrey Pines is a course where you need to drive it long and it was encouraging to see Vegas rank 2nd in driving distance, 4th in GIRs and 12th in strokes gained off the tee.

Three missed cuts in a row at the Genesis Invitational dampen enthusiasm slightly but Vegas was struggling during that period’ there’s also a couple of top-20 further back in his resume that provide optimism.

This is a stacked field but at 125/1 with most bookies paying 8 places at 1/5 odds, he provides some value.
