McIlroy Denied Again

McIlroy: the nearly man of the moment

The Northern Irishman is getting lots of sympathy votes, but he wants trophies.

For the second week running Rory McIlroy narrowly missed out on tournament victory, this time having led the Malaysian Open by three shots at one stage during round three. However, a final round 69 from the Northern Irishman showed that he certainly didn’t gift top spot to eventual winner Matteo Manassero. The Italian holed a nine-iron for eagle on his way to a final round 68 that secured a second European Tour title just two days before his 18th birthday. He is now a 50/1 shot to win the British Open this summer.

For McIlroy, it was ultimately a hugely impressive comeback tournament following on from his immense disappointment at Augusta only one Sunday earlier. The bookies are more focused on his consistent ability to be in contention than the fact he isn’t quite seeing out victories. He is third favourite for the Open behind Woods and Westwood, at 16/1.
