Maybank Championship Tip: Ashley Chesters

Debut at this event but record at Fan Ling, a similair venue, is T39-T14. His strength is hitting fairways and greens and that is key around Suajana G&CC.

The Maybank Championship takes centre stage on the European Tour and Suajana G&CC provides a specific test. Not unlike Fan Ling, used for the Hong Kong Open, golfers will face a tight tree-lined course but still one where birdies can be found.

Accuracy and greens is the name of the game and that puts Ashley Chesters top of my list. The Englishman was second on tour for driving accuracy last season and 21st for GIRs. With those types of numbers you’d expect a slew of top-10s but as often is the case, putting was an issue.

The 29-year-old simply doesn’t hole enough putts but he’s got enough game to contend and is a hot putter away from a big result. Last season he finished fourth at Valderrama, whilst this year he has top-15 finishes at the Vic Open and the Oman Open. Any course where you have to show a degree of accuracy and patience and Chesters chances improve.

His record at the aforementioned Hong Kong Open is T39-T14 and although this is his debut at the Maybank he has good collateral form.
