If anyone can...Simon Khan

Khan is back to defend his title.

The bookies didn’t give this journeyman a prayer last season and he stormed to victory with a final round 66.

Last year’s champion may have been a 500/1 shot, but he’s no flash in the pan at Wentworth. It’s fair to say that Simon Khan has laboured for much of his career as a touring professional but on the fairways of the famous old West Course this 38-year-old comes alive. In 2010 the bookies had taken no heed from the Englishman’s impressive 2nd place finish at the same event in 2006. In 2008 he commanded Wentworth yet again with a commendable T10 finish. Having picked up the life-changing winner’s cheque for £637,000 last May, the bookies remain only slightly chastened. At 150/1 with Coral why shouldn’t we think Khan can excel for a fourth time in Surrey?

It’s not as though the man from Essex suddenly wilted and crawled over the line when the spotlight of the world’s media fell upon him last year. With world star Luke Donald breathing down his neck, Kahn rolled in a delightful 20-foot birdie putt on the final green to claim his dramatic, unexpected one shot victory.

We could be forgiven for missing this long shot in 2010 but it might be remiss to miss out on the value still on offer this time around. With a 1st, a 2nd and a T-10 at Wentworth, Simon Khan remains a bargain at 150/1.
