Farmers Insurance Open Tip: Trey Mullinax

To win at Torrey Pines you've got to do most of the work through the air. Mullinax is prodigious in length and finding some form of late.

It’s a new year and Torrey Pines sees the return of the greatest golfer of all time - yes Trey Mullinax is in the line up for the Farmers Insurance Open. Tongue is firmly in cheek but Betting Bias are his most ardent followers and one day he’ll come good.

Backing a 25-year-old who lost his tour card last year might seem like lunacy in this field but Torrey Pines is a good fit for Mullinax. To win around this classic layout you need to hit the ball long and high, there is often very little carry on the lengthy 7698-yard South course. Basically to win at Torrey Pines you need to do it through the air.

No problem for Mullinax who ranked ninth in driving distance last season and ninth in driving apex height this season. Last week he got onto the fringes of contending at the CareerBuilder and his last three tour starts have been 20-37-57. Twelve months ago Mullinax finished T49 on debut at Torrey Pines and it doesn’t hurt to dream a little.
