Dubai World Championship Tips: Marcel Siem

Enjoyed his best year on tour by some considerable margin. Finally starting to fulfil his potential.

After years of under-achievement, Marcel Siem made a huge breakthrough on the European Tour this year. A vastly talented golfer, I thought he would take the game by storm after his 2004 victory in the Dunhill Championship but things didn’t quite go to plan. He had to wait 8 years for his next victory, which came at the Open de France in July.

One of the longest hitters on tour, he has managed to tighten up his short game and that has translated into improved results. He’s earned over €1.3million in 2012, more than 2.5 times his previous best and sits 14th in the Race to Dubai. For the first time in his career, his stroke average is under 71, evidence that his game has dramatically improved.

The fiery German is still prone to the odd lapse but overall his game has moved to a new level this year. With his confidence renewed, he should not be 150/1 (Stan James) despite the stellar names in the field.
