Dubai World Championship Tips: Luke Donald

World number one, PGA Tour player of the year elect yet 12/1 in the betting? No way he should be double the price of Lee Westwood.

Looking at the betting for the Dubai World Championship got me thinking. Luke Donald is third favourite at 12/1 with Skybet, but how can that be when you look at his achievements in 2011?

• Ranked the number one golfer in the world
• Topped the money list on the PGA Tour
• Tops the money list on the European Tour
• Excluding majors has finished: 1-6-2-1-1-2-9-11 on the European Tour

For a player who is enjoying such an incredible season it seems scandalous to price him only two points shorter than Sergio Garcia.

The bookmakers might point to his lack of competitive golf, but can you really trust form during a period when players are contesting small field invitationals?

Donald was solid rather than spectacular in the Nedback World Challenge, but that was his first tournament in five weeks so chances were he was going to be rusty. I’d see his prolonged break as a positive; time to refresh the batteries after a gruelling finish to the PGA Tour season - a luxury Rory McIlroy hasn’t been afforded.

The Race to Dubai title is practically in the bag but I’m sure Luke Donald will want to finish the season on a high. He managed this in the States with a fabulous final round 64 to win the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic and I have no doubt he can repeat the feat.

Outside of a major it is not often you get to back Luke Donald at 12/1 (Skybet), so make the most of this opportunity.
