DP World Tour Tip: Jorge Campillo

Shot rounds of 72-71-68-65 on debut at this event two years ago. Recent form is poor but the course could spark a revival. Enjoyed a terrific first half to the season.

There’s plenty of quality at the top of the market as you would expect for the European Tour’s season finale but I can’t help feel the whole Rolex Series has run out of steam. Francesco Molinari has all but sewn up the Race To Dubai, majors and Ryder Cups are over.

Looking through the roll of honour at this event and it’s hard to class any of the champions as ‘surprise winners’ but that doesn’t stop me in the pursuit of a big payday. Jorge Campillo is 24th in the Race To Dubai and this can be classed as the finest season of his career. He’s still without a win to his name (in 253 professional starts) and that is the rub, but he’s gone close on plenty of occasions this season.

The bad news is he seems to have gone off the boil in recent weeks with only one top-20 since the start of August but that is why he’s 200/1. The good news is his course form. On debut at Jumeirah Golf Estates he went 72-71-68-65; every time he played he got better. Some might argue he was simply freewheeling but if the course suits we could be ignoring a valuable piece of information.

At the price i’m happy to take the risk.
