Canadian Open Tips: Patrick Reed

Has two top-10 finishes in his last five starts and can take encouragement from Jordan Spieth’s recent win.

Jordan Spieth proved age was no barrier to winning golf tournaments at the John Deere Classic and Patrick Reed could quickly follow in his footsteps.

The 22-year-old enjoyed an excellent amateur career winning the Junior British Open, the Jones Cup Invitational and making the semi-finals of the 2008 US Amateur Championship.

Reed has quickly adapted to life on the PGA Tour and in the last couple of months he has the results to prove it. Since the start of June, he’s finished 5-T18-T34-MC-T7, helping him move up to 86th in the FedEx Cup Standings.

The catalyst for this improvement is the putter. In the first ten tournaments of the year he averaged -0.399 strokes gained putting but that has improved to 0.436 in the last ten tournaments.

Patrick Reed could become a big hit in the next couple of years but the value is in catching him before the breakthrough. Backing him each-way at 125/1 (BetVictor) with ¼ odds for a top-6 finish looks like sound business.
