Canadian Open Tips: Daniel Summerhays

Finished fifth at the Greenbrier Classic, played on a similar par-70 course. His fourth top-10 of the year.

For my final Canadian Open pick, I’m again avoiding players who contested the Open Championship last weekend. With mental fatigue a possible hangover from Royal Lytham & St. Annes, I’m drawn to players who missed the recent major.

Daniel Summerhays falls into that category and should arrive in Ontario refreshed after a week off. Now in his second year on tour, the 28-year-old from Utah looks comfortable in his surroundings. He has already tripled his entire 2011 earnings with a string of top-10 finishes.

One of these came three weeks ago when he finished 5th at the Greenbrier Classic. Played on a par-70 course not dissimilar to Hamilton Golf & Country Club, it should stand him in good stead.

His brother Boyd plays on the Canadian Tour and perhaps a bit of sibling rivalry could inspire Daniel to excel on his brother’s patch. He certainly has the ability and at 100/1 (Bet365) he is overpriced. Bach him each-way and get ¼ odds for a top-5 finish.
