Canadian Open Tip: Bubba Watson

Lightly raced this season but made plenty of cuts and has five top-25s. Finished second at this event in 2015 and has experience of Hamilton G&CC with a T14 on debut back in 2006.

The Canadian Open has a fascinating book with DJ, Brooks Koepka and Rory McIlroy taking out a large chunk of the market but will they be fully wound up the week before the US Open? Dustin Johnson returns as defending champion but that was from late July when the tournament followed the Open Championship and i’m happy to oppose all three.

Further down the list we find Bubba Watson at the same odds as his age. The 40-year-old has been conspicuous by his absence but his schedule between the Masters and US Open is usually very light, with the Memorial generally acting as his prep. However, the change of date for the Canadian Open has opened up a different route.

Bubba has played this event eight times, finishing runner-up in 2015 at Glen Abbey although we should note the change of venue. This year Hamilton Golf and Country Club hosts as it did in 2012 and 2006, when Bubba made his debut at this event finished T14.

The world number 19 missed the cut at the PGA Championship on his last start but Bubba doesn’t do much at Majors outside of Augusta but he knows how to win regular tour events, he won three of them last year and is a big price to bag another.
