Byron Nelson Tips: Garth Mulroy

Rapidly improving player who won the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit during the winter. Made the cut both times he’s played the Byron Nelson.

When you are discussing players in the 300/1 price bracket, you are normally looking for just a crumb of comfort. Not with Garth Mulroy. Here you are backing someone who has enjoyed the best 12 months of his career.

Winner of the Alfred Dunhill Championship in his native South Africa back in November, Mulroy went on to clinch the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit. This is a money list competition comprised of mainly South African tournaments. It’s no pushover either. Ernie Els, Tim Clark, Trevor Immelman and Charl Schwartzel are all previous winners.

It went almost as well for Mulroy in the United States. A winner on the Nationwide Tour in 2011, he graduated to the PGA Tour after finishing 21st on the money list. That brings his tour membership up to three as he also plays on the European Tour.

The fact the 33-year-old splits his time around the world, means he doesn’t get the credit he deserves. Thankfully that works in our favour, as we get odds of 300/1 (Stan James) on him to win a golf tournament.

A missed cut two weeks ago at the Wells Fargo is modest form but he only failed by one shot. More encouraging was his T29 at the WGC-Cadillac Championship in a much stronger field.

The Byron Nelson is a regular fixture on Mulroy’s schedule; he has played the event twice, making the cut both times. Last year he shot an opening 67 on the way to a T45 finish.

Boosted by his mid-winter success, odds of 300/1 (Stan James) are too big for a recent winner returning to a familiar course. Back him each way and get ¼ odds for a top-five finish.
