British Open Tips: Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson best of the Americans

One of a host of eye-catchingly priced Americans. Has a good major tournament record and should relish the challenge.

With all the hype surrounding the home challenge, it is easy to forget that in a Tiger-less era there are still some good golfers in the States. Looking at the outright markets there are several Americans overpriced, with the likes of Hunter Mahan at 80/1. The player I really like however is – Dustin Johnson.

Perhaps guilty of throwing away two majors in his career already, he has shown the ability to compete at the sharp end at least. His record in the last six majors is T38-T8-T14-T5-T38-T23, with a T-14 at St. Andrews last year.

By all accounts the rough at Royal St. George’s is lighter than usual and the fairways are much wider than in 2003. This means the big hitters could be favoured. Fourth in driving distance on the PGA tour, Dustin Johnson will be pleased with the course set up.

It must not be assumed that he is a flat track bully. He has won at Pebble Beach in the States and competed well at US Opens, when courses are tougher than the usual tour standard.

Ranked number 12 in the world, the 70/1 on offer with Coral is too much to resist. Back him each way and the bookmaker will pay out 1/3 odds for a top five finish.
