British Open profile: Nick Watney

Watney is the FedEx number one.

Currently the leading man on the US tour. It takes something different to win the British Open though.

Best Odds: 35/1 - StanJames
Age: 30
World Ranking: 10
Best Results in Open: T7 - 2010, T27 - 2009

Open Record:

A relative newcomer to the British Open, he has never done too badly on three visits to the UK. A T35 debut at Carnoustie was followed by a T27 at Turnberry and a T7 at St Andrews on his last trip over. The American was comfortable at the home of golf where he finished at six-under and competed with everyone other than runaway winner Louis Oosthuizen. Improvement with every links tournament played bodes well this time.

Form:

The current leader of the FedExCup race after winning two tournaments on the PGA tour already this year. Watney took down the WGC Cadillac Championship in March and followed that with the AT&T National title as recently as July 3rd. There have been a total of eight top-10s in 14 events played in 2011. Suffice to say, form is of no concern.

Verdict:

The main blot on the Watney copybook is that he is yet to seriously contend in a major championship. He had a seventh at Augusta in 2010 to go with his T7 at St Andrews, but he is yet to feel the pressure of thinking he could win one of the big four. The bookies make him the most likely of the Americans to return home with the Claret Jug, but that says a great deal about the problems they are having stateside. A golfer on great form, but he recently missed the cut at the US Open and has plenty still to prove.
