British Open Profile: Lee Westwood

Westwood is always thereabouts.

The world number 12 is a serial contender in the majors but is yet to win one. Could he sneak one when nobody's really looking?

Best Odds: 30/1 (PaddyPower)
Age: 40
World Ranking: 12
Best Open Results: 2nd - 2010, T3 - 2009, 4th - 2004.

Open Record:

The Open Championship is yet another major in which Westwood has frequently flirted with glory before ultimately missing out. Had his first top-10 finish way back in 1997 before nabbing fourth in 2004. However, the closest calls have come more recently. A T3 finish at Turnberry in 2009 was followed by the runners-up spot at St Andrews in 2010. However, he was hugely disappointed to miss the weekend at Sandwich in 2011 before a T45 last year.

Form:

Having one of his most lacklustre seasons in many years which explains his slide down the world rankings. At least there were decent T8 showings at both the Masters and the Players Championship, but to get to July without a single top-three finish is distinctly ordinary for a golfer of his calibre.

Verdict:

So many times he has arrived on a wave of expectation, but that’s not the case this time. It has been left to the man himself to talk himself up. Discussing Muirfield, he told The Sun: “After one look this time, I felt certain I’d have a good week. It seems a great fit for my game.” Sadly, based on form and past experience, there look to be better options in the same price bracket though.
